What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine actually doesn’t utilize any drugs or medications. The entire goal of these regenerative therapies is to generate and heal damaged tissue by using cells/resources that already occur naturally in your body. At Lookout Valley Chiropractic, Lisa Gilliand, NP utilizes stem cells and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to obtain these goals.

PRP (Platelet-rich Plasma)

PRP is of the most effective treatments for degenerative conditions such as arthritis. It is also extremely effective for partial muscle tears/injuries and ligament damage. This treatment begins with a blood draw. That blood is then inserted into a centrifuge which separates a layer of platelets. The highly concentrated platelets are re-injected into the injury site.

Platelets contain high concentrations of growth factors that:

• Stimulate repair cells
• Promote tissue regeneration
• Increase collagen production
• Cause new blood vessel growth
• Significantly decrease inflammation

The entire procedure takes 30-45 minutes and results can be noticed as quickly as 24 hours after it is completed. Mild to moderate injuries usually take a single injection. For more severe and chronic injuries, 2 or 3 PRP injections may be necessary.

Stem Cell (MCS’s) Injections/Infusions

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC’s) are considered the gold standard for regenerative medicine. Stem cells are undifferentiated which means they may become any type of cell or signal the regrowth of new cells. When you were an embryo, you were originally made up of stem cells that eventually turned into hair cells, skin cells, bone cells, the cells of your heart, and so on.

This means that we can inject stem cells directly into a site of injury or degeneration and this may regrow or signal for the regrowth/repair of tissue in that area. The stem cells can differentiate and become new cartilage, ligaments, or muscle fibers and create a permanent change.
